Resident Evil is a 2026 horror film directed by Zach Cregger and written by Cregger and Shay Hatten, based on the Resident Evil video game franchise by Capcom. It follows Bryan (Austin Abrams), a young medical courier who must fight through an outbreak of infected monsters in Raccoon City. Zach Cherry, Kali Reis, Johnno Wilson, and Paul Walter Hauser feature in supporting roles.
Constantin Film began planning a reboot of the Resident Evil film series in early 2022, following the failure of Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City (2021) and the cancellation of the 2022 Netflix television series. Cregger was hired in January 2025, and Sony Pictures' PlayStation Productions joined the production. Four studios, including Warner Bros. Pictures and Netflix, bid for the film rights, with Sony winning in March. Filming began in October 2025 in Prague.
Resident Evil premiered in Los Angeles on September 15. It was theatrically released in the United States on September 18, 2026, by Sony Pictures Releasing. It grossed $8.8 million in the box office and received critical acclaim, becoming the highest-rated film based on a video game on Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic.
Medical courier Bryan agrees to take a mysterious time-sensitive package to Raccoon General Hospital in Raccoon City, Colorado. On the way, Bryan argues with his girlfriend Michelle over her pregnancy, and accidentally hits a woman crossing the road. Bryan takes the injured, catatonic woman to his car, but Deputy Sheriff Wilson pulls him over, takes the woman, and tells Bryan to follow him. The cruiser suddenly swerves and crashes, killing Wilson. The woman attacks Bryan, who shoots her with Wilson's gun.
Having accidentally shot his car's engine, Bryan walks to a nearby house and is attacked by a mutated dog, which he kills. Inside the home, He finds a double-barreled shotgun and leaves Michelle a voicemail. Upstairs, he finds ammunition and sees the woman running toward the house before being suddenly attacked by her husband, whom he kills before using the shotgun to shoot the woman's head off. Shocked, he watches as tentacles emerge from their corpses, fusing them together. After failing to leave in the couple's truck, Bryan flees on foot and enters a dark tunnel. Inside, he finds an RV and a young, infected girl who begs him to save her. While attempting to help her, she mutates and bites him, causing Bryan to shoot her.
Outside, he is rescued by Umbrella Corporation employees Paul and Maxine, who fend off the woman, now an amalgam of various corpses. Paul explains to Bryan that Umbrella is responsible for the ongoing outbreak in Raccoon City, and that his package contains a stabilizer needed to create the cure. Paul and Maxine are killed shortly after arriving at Raccoon City, and Bryan, now armed with a submachine gun, escapes through the sewers. While exploring the sewers, he finds a pale, obese humanoid creature. Swarms of mutated rats burst from the creature's stomach and scurry towards Bryan, who exits the sewers after shooting them.
